The autumn fern - brilliant spring colour

Dryopteris erythrosia

One of the best garden ferns, the Japanese shield fern is a great grower with wonderful fleshy pink spring foliage. It can be semi-evergreen with shuttlecock like rosettes of lance shaped to ovate, pinnately divided fronds. It will grow to 1 metre high. As its from the dryopteris familly it can handle quite a dry soil once established. If you have only one fern in the garden you could do a lot worse than this beauty.
